Dust jacket reads: This unusual book is a biography-in-letters of the author's late sister, Mary Kirk, whose girlhood friend, Wallis Warfield, married the duke of Windsor after his abdication from the British throne in 1936. Anne and her sisters were brought up in well-to-do circles in Baltimore and attended fashionable schools. Mary's friendship with Wallis continued into their adult years when both were abroad, and it was Mary who introduced Wallis to Ernest Simpson, the man who was to be Wallis's and then Mary's second husband. "Last of the Dandies is Nick Foulkes's wonderful account of one of history's most colorful, flamboyant, raffish and scandalous of characters-Count d'Orsay. Born in France at the turn of the nineteenth century, d'Orsay enjoyed a childhood with allof the benefits and luxuries of Napoleon's Paris. By the time political changes forced his family into exile, this handsome, precocious youth was ready to take London society by storn. The prevailing male fashion of the time was pale, lethargic, and melancholic. D'Orsay-a man who required as many as six pairs of gloves to see him through the day-was the antithesis in both spirit and appearance. D'Orsay's style and charm soon found favor with the influential Lord and Lady Blessington, who invited him to tour Europe with them. While on tour there he met some of the continent's most influential figures and boosted his reputation, and a lengthy stay in Naples cemented his extravagant tastes.
