BRUNO HAUPTMANN ELECTROCUTED--The man convicted of the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby dies in the electric chair. PACIFIC CLIPPER MAKES FIRST FLIGHT-- The Philippine Clipper, equipped with the latest passenger conveniences, takes off on its maiden crossing from California to Manila. LEAGUE CONFERS ON RHINE PROBLEM--Germany's treaty violation in sending troops into the demilitarized zone of the Rhineland prompts the League of Nations to call a conference in London. MEMORIAL DAY RACE SETS RECORDS--An unprecedented crowd of 166,000 sees Louis Meyer set a new speed record and become the only 3-time winner of the Indianapolis 500. GENERAL MITCHELL DEMANDS AIR POWER--Sharply criticizing the inadequacy of U.S. air strength, noted aviation pioneer General William D. (Billy) Mitchell sounds a strong warning on the consequences if it is not built up. BRITISH ARTS STUDENTS' "CLASSIC"--Wild revelry and crazy floats mark the famed annual Chelsea Arts Ball. ITALY CONQUERS ETHIOPIA--Emperor Haile Selassie's primitive troops make a last desperate stand, but Mussolini's highly-trained war machine sends them fleeing. GOLD MEDALIST OWENS RETURNS--Sprinter Jesse Owens arrives back in the U.S. from the Berlin Olympics. SPANISH UPRISING CONTINUES--As Barcelona begins cleaning up after the bitter conflict that has raged throughout the city, trainloads of Loyalist troops leave to stem the rebel advances into Aragon. HOWARD HUGHES WINS A BET--The millionaire sportsman and aviator takes off from Chicago at lunchtime on a wager that he can reach California by dinnertime, just 8 hours later. FLOODS LEAVE TRAIL OF RUIN--In Harrisburg, Pa., scenes of the destruction wrought by floods are typical of the situation in many areas. Two hundred thousand have been rendered homeless. Their elder daughter, little Princess Elizabeth, now becomes the Heiress Presumptive. HIGH WIRE WALKERS DEFY DEATH--Bunny Dryden and his wife perform on a wire strung 12 stories high between buildings on a Los Angeles city street - with no safety net. STRIKERS BATTLE AT PA. SHIPYARD--One man is dead and forty injured before police tear-gas bombs break up hostilities between picketers and workmen. GIANTS TAKE WORLD SERIES OPENER--This year's baseball classic is an all New York event - Giants vs. Yankees - and a nickel subway ride to either ballpark. AIR SHOW THRILLS CROWD--Daredevils show their stuff at the annual All-American Air Meet in Miami. ROOSEVELT WINS IN LANDSLIDE--In the biggest election victory since 1820, Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Democratic Party carry 46 states, losing only Maine and Vermont. Jubilant crowds celebrate in Times Square, and the traditional paying off of election bets creates some odd spectacles. CHRISTMAS FOR THE LADIES--Santa Claus visits Chicago's Merchandise Mart and approves of the nighties and negligees modeled for seasonal gift-giving.
