"Whether as dubious aids to beauty or for eating with, false teeth are a hitherto unexplored branch of social history. Few will know what the first full sets looked like and what kept them in place. Still fewer will know that Elizabeth I used rolls of cloth to pad out her lips; that Lord Palmerston's false teeth seemed always on the point of falling out; or that the American presidential world cruise was ruined for President Grant by the loss of his false teeth overboard. Little over one hundred years ago false teeth were so insecure that they were commonly removed for eating; for reasons of delicacy, young lady wearers did much of their eating in the bedroom. The delicacy of feeling that still surrounds this fascinating yet often embarrassing subject may explain why John Woodforde's book is the first in its field. James Laver writes in the Foreword: 'Mr Woodforde has written a fascinating book. His immense erudition is lightly worn. Painlessly he takes us through the whole development of dentistry, shows its relevance to social life and manners, deals with modern techniques, relates it to forensic medicine, and indeed to every aspect of human existence. He has made a real contribution to history, or at least to those aspects of it which official historians so often forget.'"
