"Born in 1900 and living through all of the 20th century to date, Cornelius Allen Alexander has been an expert witness to the dramatic changes that have swept the world during his lifetime. Born into poverty as the grandson of a slave, he overcame the many hurdles cluttering his path, graduated from the prestigious Rush Medical School of the University of Chicago, and conducted an extraordinarily successful practice in Kalamazoo Michigan, as the community's first black surgeon. When he retired after fifty years of practice, his contributions to social and professional life in southwester Michigan were widely recognized and enthusiastically applauded. That should have been a successful close for anyone's career. Not in the case of C. Allen Alexander! Regarding 'retirement' merely as an opportunity to retool for a fresh new career, he embarked on a highly ambitious Oral History Project, which aimed to trace the vast changes in society and medicine that occurred in western Michigan from 1930 to 1990. Through well over a hundred tape-recorded interviews with people from various ethnic and professional groups, he evoked eyewitness testimonies to the progress achieved through six decades. People who actually lived through the problems of society and the pains of early medicine recorded their memories of the 'before' and 'after' of the striking changes they experienced, providing valuable source material for the historian or anyone interested in how the present evolved from the past."
