The son of a Jewish tailor from London's East End, he began his career as the owner of the Prince of Wales theatre. Gradually expanding his interests into property, engineering and shipping, he was just another clever financier. But then, in the early I950s, his business genius revealed itself through his brilliant takeover of the moribund Sears Holding against the wishes of its directors - behaviour that was both unprecedented and condemned at the time. From then on, through numerous takeovers, his empire grew until he became a household name. But while all he touched in business turned to gold, everything in his personal life turned to dust. For all his wealth, 'the richest man in England' was desperately unhappy. His marriage was a disaster and he became estranged from his children. Always in night-clubs and at parties until the early hours, and frequently surrounded by beautiful women, he none the less became known as 'the lonely millionaire'. Even his self-imposed tax exile ended when he died in a London hospital only months before his money would have been out of the taxman's reach. This biography, written with the co-operation of Clore's daughter and many of his friends and business colleagues, reveals for the first time the real Clore - the man who during his lifetime was referred to as the last of the great entrepreneurs, but who was in fact the precursor of the business empire builders of today."
