Dust jacket reads: Cecil Beaton will forever be associated in most people's minds with his work as a society photographer and with his contribution to choreography and design in the years immediately preceding and following the Second World War. However, in one of its more inspired moments during the war, the British Ministry of Information decided to send Beaton with his camera to the Far East in order to take photographs of the Empire and its Allies at war. The result was a collection of superb photographs of China, a selection of which are reproduced here together with the China section of his travel diary Far East. Photographing by day and writing up his diary at night, he has produced 3" vivid portrait of Nationalist China in its last years. His portraits of the Chinese heartland still free and valiantly fighting off the Japanese have captured the images of a period which has passed forever. The scenes which he took reveal the essence of China in travail; the faces of the captains and of the underprivileged; the sufferings of the wounded and the maimed; the appalling poverty; and the beauty and grace of Chinese buildings and Chinese landscapes. These magnificent images in black and white are accompanied by equally penetrating portraits in words which provide entertaining accounts of the people he met, the sights he saw and the experiences he had en route.
