Dust jacket notes read: "Loelia Lindsay is one of six women living today who at one time bore the title of Duchess of Westminster. She was born with what many might consider to be a silver spoon in her mouth. Her father, Sir Frederick Ponsonby, was a key figure in the households of Queen Victoria, Edward VII and George V. She grew up in St. James's Palace, where she led a cowed and unhappy childhood before emerging, shy and bewildered, into the bright world of the Twenties. Irritated by conventional society life, she gravitated towards a more amusing milieu, the world of 'The Bright Young Things', of Noel Coward and Cecil Beaton. Their high jinks, though harmless enough in retrospect, astonished her parents' generation. These remained unsettled years for Loelia until she met the legendary Bendor, the dashing and eccentric Duke of Westminster, who lived in a fantastic eighteenth-century style until his death in 1953. Twice married, he was not what Loelia's parents deemed a 'suitable match' but Loelia was soon swept off her feet and married him in a blaze of publicity in 1930. Dust jacket reads: This unusual book is a biography-in-letters of the author's late sister, Mary Kirk, whose girlhood friend, Wallis Warfield, married the duke of Windsor after his abdication from the British throne in 1936. Anne and her sisters were brought up in well-to-do circles in Baltimore and attended fashionable schools. Mary's friendship with Wallis continued into their adult years when both were abroad, and it was Mary who introduced Wallis to Ernest Simpson, the man who was to be Wallis's and then Mary's second husband. Were it not for this introduction there would never have been an abdication of the king, nor any "Love Story of the Century." This original film still from the documentary film, A King's Story. Circa 1965. The photo is in NEAR FINE condition. Dog-eared bottom right edge. The Duke's sartorial refinement shows very well in the photo. His fashion sense looks as fresh as if it were appearing in today's GQ magazine (not the belt, the cuffed trousers, and his shoes).
