Dust jacket notes read: "Loelia Lindsay is one of six women living today who at one time bore the title of Duchess of Westminster. She was born with what many might consider to be a silver spoon in her mouth. Her father, Sir Frederick Ponsonby, was a key figure in the households of Queen Victoria, Edward VII and George V. She grew up in St. James's Palace, where she led a cowed and unhappy childhood before emerging, shy and bewildered, into the bright world of the Twenties. Irritated by conventional society life, she gravitated towards a more amusing milieu, the world of 'The Bright Young Things', of Noel Coward and Cecil Beaton. Their high jinks, though harmless enough in retrospect, astonished her parents' generation. These remained unsettled years for Loelia until she met the legendary Bendor, the dashing and eccentric Duke of Westminster, who lived in a fantastic eighteenth-century style until his death in 1953. Twice married, he was not what Loelia's parents deemed a 'suitable match' but Loelia was soon swept off her feet and married him in a blaze of publicity in 1930. She was transformed at once from being a relatively impoverished girl to the mistress of Eaton Hall, several other houses and two huge yachts. She looked set to live happily ever after. But Bendor was a man of changing moods - devastating charm at one moment, tyrannical jealousy the next. In less than five years they parted. Loelia had to create a new life for herself, devoted to travel and music, and to needlework at which she is an expert. In 1961 she published her bestselling memoirs Grace and Favour in which she related the story of her life. Now she has turned to twenty large albums, leather-bound and coronetted, and selected some 200 photographs which trace a life lived at the very heart of the twentieth century. In these pages are found the Prince of Wales at Balmoral home on leave from the trenches, Noel Coward as a shy young man, Cecil Beaton swimming at Cannes; the Duke of Kent and Princess Marina playing croquet on a summer lawn. There are the exaggerated poses of the Bright Twenties and of later days, the magnificent Eaton Hall in its heyday before it was demolished, and, in total contrast, Goldeneye, Ian Fleming's legendary home. Dust jacket notes read: "In 1956 a little book edited by the late Nancy Mitford and called Noblesse Oblige hit the world like a bombshell. Profiting from the researches of the philologist, Professor Alan C. Ross, who had coined the expressions 'U' and 'non-U' - that is 'Upper-class' and 'non-Upper-class' - she set about telling the man in the street just how common he was. Overnight, aristocrats who had spoken and behaved in a certain way from the cradle upwards found themselves giggling self-consciously when they offered each other 'a glass of sherry' as they had always done, instead of 'a sherry' as they were now told the vulgar did. At the same time, lower-middle-class people, who had always thought they were living graciously when they said 'Pardon?' instead of 'What?' or, on greeting a stranger, 'Pleased to meet you', learned that they were being 'genteel', which their betters considered the most ludicrous thing of all. Also guest speaking will be Society Member Richard Rene Silvin, who is currently writing a memoir about his friendship with the Duchess of Windsor, titled Noblesse Oblige. Silvin was a friend of the Duchess' in the early 70s when he was administrator of the American Hospital in Paris, an organization where the both the Windsors received their healthcare and also in which the duchess served on the Board of Governors. The event will feature a cocktail party and gala dinner Saturday night, with a custom menu prepared by the hotel's chef which features menu items or recipes of the Duchess of Windsor. Entertainment will include excerpts by Society Member and playwright and actress, Lena Farugia, author of the Duchess of Windsor play, UNTITLED, which recently had its European debut this year in London at the Finborough Theater.
