BRITAIN'S AIR MIGHT England's bid for leadership in aircraft design makes an impressive bid at Farnborough. An experimental Fairey delta wing holds the world's speed record and the Hawker Hunter is the first plane equipped with air-to-air missiles. Other merchants of speed and power impress the visiting Russian delegation of observers who are among the possible purchasers. JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS At Seattle University, U.S. collegians and amateurs battle for the Black Belt. BABY ZOO At Chicago's Brookfield Zoo, a baby rhino, lion cubs, and a baby orangutan introduce young visitors to the city's new Children's Zoo. IKE AT PANAMA MEETING President Eisenhower meets with the heads of 17 American nations in Panama, a 2-day President's Conference that culminates with a five-point declaration of common ideals reaffirming the unity of the Western Hemisphere, and highlighted by Ike's proposal of an inter-American atomic development plan. NATIONWIDE TEST OF CIVIL DEFENSE "Operation Alert" stages a full-scale mock air raid to test the nation's civil defense preparedness. 75 key targets around the country are designated "hit" by H-bomb raids, as the populace takes shelter. IOWA COED NAMED "MISS UNIVERSE" 20-year-old Carol Morris of Iowa is chosen Miss Universe. 1956 THE YEAR IN SPORTS High points of the year include the Olympics as well as exciting moments in major sporting events. America pays tribute to two greats who died this year: Connie Mack, the beloved veteran of 70 years in baseball, and the brilliant Babe Didrickson Zaharias, who succumbed after a courageous 3-year bout with cancer. MIRACLE AT SEA 2,500 escape death when the Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria is sunk off Nantucket in a collision with the Swedish liner Stockholm. ROCK 'N' ROLL TEEN RODEO Teen-agers from 14 states display their skills in the 8th National High School Championship Rodeo in Reno, Nevada. IT'S IKE AND NIXON The Republican National Convention in San Francisco reaches a jubilant end with the unanimous re-nomination of President Eisenhower for the G.O.P. in the '56 Presidential campaign, with Vice President Nixon as his running mate. FLYING SAUCER" RADAR PLANE In California, a Super Constellation topped by a 30-foot radar disk makes its first flight. Though it looks like a flying saucer, it's the largest, longest-ranged airborne radar yet developed. AMERICAN BEAUTIES The annual contests for Miss America and Miss College choose their winners. HOAD UPSET IN TENNIS FINALS Australia's Lew Hoad and Ken Rosewall square off in the finals of the U.S. Open's Men's Singles at Forest Hills. Rosewall plays a blazing game, to defeat Hoad and become the new U.S. champ. WAR IN EGYPT A major crisis confronts the world as Israel attacks Egypt, while France and Britain prepare to move troops into the Suez Canal. Egypt is bombed by British jets, and the U.N. General Assembly meets in emergency session to consider the treat to peace. HUNGARY FREE - BUT FACES NEW THREAT After a bitter 6 days of revolution, Hungary temporarily wins independence from Russian domination. Following Premier Nagy's declaration of neutrality, Soviet troops move into Hungary again, even before all the revolution's dead are buried. Hungary appeals to the U.N. for a guarantee of Hungary's hard-won sovereignty. HORSE SHOW OPENS At the opening of the 68th National Horse Show in New York, Mexico's General Humberto Moriles tops crack riders of 5 nations in a grueling jumping event to win the Good Will Challenge Trophy. TONY CURTIS URGES "BUY BONDS" Actor Tony Curtis appears as spokesman in a message to the American public, urging the purchase of U.S. Savings Bonds by the whole family. LANDSLIDE FOR IKE President Eisenhower is re-elected to another 4 year term, defeating Adlai Stevenson by a landslide. LAST STAND FOR HUNGARY Encircled by units from 15 Soviet Army divisions, Hungarian patriots fight desperately in a doomed effort to win their freedom. Thousands of refugees flee toward the Austrian border, but Russian tanks block the last road to safety. HIROSHIMA MAIDENS The last group of Japanese girls who survived the Hiroshima atomic bomb attack departs from San Francisco after a year and a half of plastic surgery in the U.S. to remove radiation scars. WINTER SPORTS FASHIONS Models display the latest styles in skiing and skating attire at Bear Mountain, NY. SANTA WITHOUT REINDEER In Allentown, PA, Santa Claus makes an early appearance via a "Flying Saucer," to the cheers of thousands of youngsters. REFUGEES WELCOMED 100 Hungarian refugees arrive in California for resettlement. They are greeted by Governor and Mrs. Knight and throngs of well-wishers. GOOD NEIGHBORS GOLF At Augusta's National Golf Club, President Eisenhower is joined by Canadian Prime Minister St. Laurent for a friendly round on the links. HEISMAN TROPHY College football's greatest individual award is presented to Notre Dame's quarterback Paul Hornung, in ceremonies at New York's Downtown Athletic Club. SPACE TRAVEL PREVIEW The first man-made satellite takes form at a Washington, DC research center.
