On the peninsula of Hong Kong, Japanese-held Kowloon Naval Base takes devastating raids, made precise by the new American bombsight. NEW CONGRESS ADDRESSED BY PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT Congress convenes to hear FOR give a speech ringing with hope and faith. The Axis Powers have already lost their opportunity to win the war, says the President. COAST GUARD ENLISTS DOGS AND HORSES America's beaches on both coasts are now patrolled by hundreds of dogs trained for guard duty. Other four-footed recruits are horses, mounted by Coast Guardsmen on sentry duty along America's shores. ENTERTAINMENT ON DECK The crew of a carrier in dry dock on America's West Coast is entertained by Hollywood's famous. THE BATTLE IN AFRICA A convoy taking supplies and food to Allied troops in Africa is bombed by the Luftwaffe but drives off the attack with anti- aircraft fire. In Tunisia, retreating Nazis leave a desert strewn with wreckage along with land mines, which are removed by British army engineers. U.S. UNIVERSITIES COMMANDEERED BY ARMY Campuses of great American universities become headquarters for military training. AMERICAN INDIANS MAKE A CONTRIBUTION When a troop train stops in the American West, Indians greet soldiers with home-cooked food and proudly proclaim 700 Indian boys in service from their small county. MAMMOTH CARGO PLANE MAKES MAIDEN FLIGHT Named the "Constellation," this new land-based plane can fly at 35,000 feet and is said to be faster than a Jap Zero. Despite a full load, the huge plane can fly the 3,OOO-mile span of the U.S. or the Atlantic Ocean in eight hours. NEW STEEL MILL FOR VICTORY SHIPS A new steel mill is completed on the Pacific Coast, which means steel for building Liberty ships will no longer have to be trans- ported all the way across the country from the big Eastern steel mills. MACARTHUR LANDS IN NEW GUINEA A Flying Fortress takes General MacArthur to an American air .- base in New Guinea, where the leader of the Allied forces in the South Pacific travels through the jungle to visit Australian troops keeping supply lines open against enemy positions. VOLUNTEERS SWELL THE BLOODBANK Desperately needed blood is given by donors across America. To date, a half million pints have been donated by volunteers. CANADA'S WOMEN ARE CHAMPS OF MUNITION MAKING In the world's largest munitions plant, thousands of French Can dian women break records in their manufacture of artillery shells and bullets for all types of guns. PRIVATE SNAFU SENDS A RUMOR TO THE WHITE HOUSE The training film brings home to GI viewers the danger of rumors. The motto of "Loose Lips Sink Ships" is elaborated with a lesson about false rumors when "Private Snafu" passes along a thought that grows into a panic by the time it reaches the White House. THE DEFENSE OF STALINGRAD After six months of occupying the city, the German army suffers the worst defeat in its history as Russians drive Nazi troops from Stalingrad. Captured is a Nazi Field Marshal who had ordered all civilians killed. RED CROSS SENDS HOPE AND SOAP TO WAR PRISONERS Red Cross volunteers spend long hours packing boxes for war prisoners overseas. Contents are medicines, coffee, soap, cigarettes, vitamins and food. FDR AND CHURCHILL MEET TO FORMULATE PLANS In Quebec, leaders of the U.S. and Britain convene to map future assaults on Axis forces. In one meeting they are aided by their top military officers, as well as an envoy from Chiang Kai-shek. THE WAAC's ARE ONE YEAR OLD The Women's Army Auxiliary Corps celebrates its first birthday. Servicemen have stopped ridiculing the idea of women in uniform, now impressed with the WAAC's success in basic raining, their work in motor pools and as radio operators, as well as clerical duties. HOLLYWOOD HELPS AGAIN IN WAR BOND DRIVE Filmdom's brightest stars gather to parade in the famous jeeps through capital streets. FIRST LADY GOES TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC Eleanor Roosevelt tirelessly tours South Pacific bases, trudging from one to another, clad in Red Cross field uniform. In Australia and New Zealand she visits hospitals and brings cheer to wounded soldiers convalescing half a world away from home. THE INVASION OF ITALY With British forces holding the boot of Italy, Salerno is targeted as the landing spot of Allied troops, whose job will be an advance northward through Italy toward Germany. ITALIAN WOMEN AND CHILDREN GO HOME Wives and children of Italian soldiers captured in Ethiopia are returned to Italy by the British, destroying Mussolini's dream of founding a colonial empire. MME. CHIANG KAI-SHEK VISITS HER ALMA MATER China's First Lady, returning to Wellesley as the University's most distinguished alumna to meet and greet today's undergraduate students, is given a royal welcome. AMERICA'S MOST FAMOUS DOG President Roosevelt has only one pet, but the three-year-old Scottie called Fala is known across the land. NAZI STRONGHOLD BLASTED A prime seaport and submarine base harboring Germany's largest war plants, Hamburg is attacked by tons of bombs delivered night and day by the 8th Air Force. As a base, Hamburg is virtually wiped off the map. A NEW WASP JOINS THE U.S. FLEET The seventh warship to bear the name Wasp slides down the ways at a U.S. shipyard. AUSSIES DISCOVER THE JEEP Across Australia's rough terrain, native troops tryout the U.S. Army's new scout car, nicknamed "Jeep" by GI's. TANKS AND SHIPS RUSHED TO THE FRONT Working three shifts around the clock, war plants and shipyards turn out tanks and ships for forces overseas. Tanks are transported by the trainload, and in the American shipyards new keels are laid every day of the week. RED CROSS APPEALS FOR FUNDS In a nationwide drive for donations, the Red Cross puts on a mammoth show in New York's Madison Square Garden, attended by Eleanor Roosevelt and Crown Princess Martha of Norway, while the renowned Rockettes offer a routine, rivaling the military in its precision. SUPPLIES MASSED FOR THE DRIVE ON ROME Preparing for a massive offensive on Rome, a multitude of weapons from the U.S. and Britain are unloaded at the port of Naples, once held by the Nazis. Included are food and medications, everything necessary to fill the supply line needed by the Fifth Army in the coming struggle. THE QUEEN MARY GOES TO WAR The biggest troop ship afloat, known in the past as a luxury liner, the Queen Mary now plies the seas carrying troops wherever needed. She returns bearing the wounded to American ports. WARSHIP CREW SENDS CHRISTMAS TO KIDS AT HOME The crew of the U.S.S. North Carolina, somewhere far from home, plans Christmas for their children. A check representing the sum of their donations has been sent to Macy's in New York along with a request to send a gift to each child.
