The dust jacket reads: "The first time the author of this book was conscious that there was a difference between what is classed as a gentle man and someone who is not classed as a gentleman was when a very eccentric aunt came to tea and, when the seven-year-old author-to-be helped himself to butter with his table knife, remarked acidly 'The difference between a person who is a gentleman and one who is not is that a gentleman always uses a butter knife even when he has tea on his own. It says much for the author's sense of humour that even at that age he regarded the remark as perfectly ludicrous. On the other hand as he progressed through private school, public school and the regular Army he began to realize that there were a great many people who took the question of whether or not someone was regarded as a gentleman or not, very seriously, indeed. One might have thought that, with the development of the new democracy which we have heard so much about since the war, that to be recognized as a gentleman was of decreasing importance. This is not so. On the contrary there are more and more members of our affluent society who are anxious for one reason or another to impress their acquaintances with their upper-class background. Those who were wont to take pride in impressing people with how they had succeeded despite their humble origins grow fewer rather than greater. Douglas Sutherland himself lives in one of the coldest mini-castles in Scotland and persists in spending all his pocket money on cartridges and whisky. It is his ardent wish that he had had training in almost anything but being a gentleman but he hopes that this slim volume will be of assistance to others who can afford the luxury."
