Y.U. defeats Notre Dame 52-13 to retain their unbeaten record. ANNUAL SAILING CLASSIC The cutter Tejeria wins the 28-mile race for the Lipton Cup. WONDER HORSE ATTEMPTS COMEBACK The famed Seabiscuit is beaten in a courageous attempt to regain his crown, finishing third. WAR IN EUROPE ESCALATES Nazi aggression spreads to Scandinavia as Germany invades Denmark, forcing it to capitulate. Strategic seaports in Norway are seized by the Nazis, but the Allies rush in warships and a major naval battle ensues. Sweden, attempting to maintain neutrality, also fears invasion. NAZIS INVADE THE NETHERLANDS The German "blitzkrieg" strikes the neutral countries of Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg, shocking the world. Thousands of Allied land, sea and air forces are rushed in from England and France to help stem the Nazi assault. BRITISH DESTROYER LIMPS HOME Reported sunk by the Nazis at the Battle of Narvik, the Cossack, which rescued scores of British seamen from the German prison ship AI/mark, is back in port and already repaired and ready for action. WORLD'S FAIR Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia of New York opens the fair's second year to a crowd of almost 200,000. STUDENTS DESIGN CRAZY HATS Most of the trimmings are edibles from the kitchen. SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS A round-up of events that made headlines this year include horse- racing, football, golf, tennis, auto-racing, track, ski-jumping and water sports. ITALY ENTERS THE WAR The rapidly-spreading war in Europe takes an even more menacing turn as Mussolini's forces join with Hitler. F.D.R. SPEAKS President Roosevelt announces plans for U.S. aid to the Allies in their battle against aggression. NAVY RELEASES PLANES TO ALLIES Fifty "Hell Divers" are turned back to the builder for shipment to France and England. The Navy order will be filled later with new models. TROOPS RUSHED TO NORTH AFRICA British and French Colonial units, including Sikh regiments from , India, arrive in Egypt to forestall Mussolini's advance. NAZIS SWEEP THROUGH FRANCE Germany launches an all-out offensive against France. Allied troops are driven back and thousands are saved by ships that transport them across the Channel to England. THE COLLAPSE OF FRANCE The Nazis march into Paris, which is declared an open city, and easily take the much-vaunted Maginot Line. The Petain government asks for peace, and Britain is left to fight on alone. PLANE ENGINE PLANT OPENS Wright Aeronautics' new factory increases U.S. production capabilities. SYNTHETIC RUBBER INVENTED A tire company chemist demonstrates his new process for making a rubber-like compound from readily available chemicals, a significant achievement in freeing the U.S. from dependence on imported rubber. NEW U.S. BATTLESHIP LAUNCHED The North Carolina is launched, with plans of joining the fleet in a year. STARS ATTEND MOVIE PREMIERE All This And Heaven Too, starring Charles Boyer and Bette Davis, gets a gala opening. RED CROSS AIDS WAR VICTIMS Volunteers roll bandages and film star Deanna Durbin makes an appeal for the war relief fund. ATLANTIC CITY PAGEANT State winners vie for the "Miss America" title. ITALIAN FORCES INVADE EGYPT Mussolini's troops capture a British desert outpost in their drive toward Alexandria. U.S. MARINES OFF TO CUBA Leathernecks head for training at the American base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. NEW FASHION FABRIC IS JERSEY Latest styles are modeled aboard the S.S. America. CINCINNATI WINS WORLD SERIES In the decisive 7th game, the "Reds" beat Detroit to take their first Series in 20 years. AMERICANS REGISTER FOR DRAFT Millions of men between the ages of 21 and 36 sign up for peace- time military conscription, designed to create a defense force in the war-torn world. THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE President Roosevelt caIls on the nation's manpower to respond to the draft in view of the world crisis. JAPAN GETS LAST SCRAP IRON Just before the President's embargo cutting off metal shipments takes effect, Japanese freighters load up. PRINCESS ELIZABETH SPEAKS TO CHILDREN The famous Dionne quintuplets are among the children of the British Empire who hear the radio message. NEW CO-ED STYLES Fashion trends for the college campus have a leaning toward the military this year. U.S. WAR REFUGEES ARRIVE Hundreds of Americans return to New York from Ireland aboard the President Roosevelt. ROOSEVELT RE- ELECTED Franklin Delano Roosevelt sets a precedent by winning a third term as U.S. President, carrying 40 states. MINNESOTA TOPS MICHIGAN, 7-6 Tom Harmon and the undefeated "Wolverines" meet defeat at the hands of the "Gopher" powerhouse. TACOMA BRIDGE COLLAPSES Only last July, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge over Puget Sound in Washington was hailed as an engineering marvel, the third longest suspension bridge in the world. But winds caused it to sway and the vibration sent it crashing 190 feet into the water below.
