Dust jacket notes read: "The Duchy of Cornwall is one of the most remarkable of all the great landowning English estates, and a full-colour book on it has long been overdue. The Duchy was founded in 1337 by Edward III to provide an income for the sovereign's eldest son, a purpose it fulfills to this day. The first Duke of Cornwall was the Black Prince. The present duke is the Prince of Wales, who since coming-of-age in 1969 has gradually transformed his inheritance into one of the most dynamic estates in the country. Despite its name, only a small percentage of the Duchy is in Cornwall, and its 129,000 acres are today scattered over twenty-two counties. The Isles of Scilly are part of the Duchy, as is much of Dartmoor. So also are inner-city housing, the Oval cricket ground and Highgrove, the Prince's Gloucestershire home. This diversity gives the Duchy its appeal, making it a jigsaw of different landscapes, an England in miniature, which as well as providing the Prince of Wales with an income are subject to his determination that environmental and architectural concerns remain central to the ways it is managed. A Royal Duchy is very much a portrait of the Duchy as it is today. The present takes precedence over the past, whilst its tenants and those who work for it stand at the heart of the book. But A Royal Duchy is more than just a recital of the Duchy's achievements, and David Burnett has taken a spirited and always fascinating view of its legacy. The whole book is gloriously illustrated with nearly 200 photographs, evoking both the unique character of the Duchy and bringing it superbly to life."
