FASHIONS FROM HISTORY With the Jefferson Memorial as a setting, wives of the nation's legislators model authentic reproductions of costumes worn by Washington's great ladies of the past. POLAR BEAR-NIKS Somewhere in the Soviet Union, a swimming hole carved in the surface of a frozen river is enjoyed by a hearty group of bathers. IKE BLASTS CHARGES OF COMPLACENCY At his White House press conference, President Eisenhower comments on charges that the administration is too complacent and concerned with economy. "Defense," says the President, "should not be an excuse for wasting dollars. . . Our defense is awesome and respected." NEW NEEDLELESS POLIO VACCINE TESTED In Dade County, Florida, a mass test of a new polio vaccine begins with a half million receiving it by mouth instead of by needle. FALL-OUT SHELTERS Available free from the Civil Defense are plans for nuclear fall-out shelters designed to be built by any handy-man. IKE IN CHILE President Eisenhower scores another triumph with his unique personal diplomacy in Chile where, despite anti-U.S. incidents, Ike's personal warmth and his message of friendship and cooperation in Latin-American progress win an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response. PRINCESS AT OPERA Escorted by the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and her fiance Antony Armstrong-Jones make their first public appearance since the surprise engagement announcement. PARIS SPRING FASHIONS Yves St. Laurent's collection for the House of Dior is shown. ELVIS IS BACK! Elvis Presley is mustered out of the service at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and apparently the attention of the entire nation is concentrated on the return of the rock 'n roll idol. SIGNS OF SPRING - MAJOR LEAGUES START TRAINING Star players of the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox, American League pennant winners, begin Spring training. POLITICS Presidential politicking moves into high gear as the Wisconsin primaries pit Democratic front-runners Humphrey and Kennedy in a test of strength, won by Senator Kennedy with a 106,000 vote margin. On the G.O.P. side, President Eisenhower attends a box lunch session of the Republican Women's National Conference to lend sup- port to Vice President Nixon's candidacy. ACADEMY AWARDS Oscar night in Hollywood sees Charlton Heston honored as Best Actor for Ben-Hur and Simone Signoret accepting Best Actress Award for Room At The Top. BIG FOUR SUMMIT CRISIS As the Big Four summit talks in Paris are about to begin, they are seriously jeopardized by revelations of the incident involving the American U-2 spy plane piloted by Gary Powers. Khrushchev accuses the United States of agg;ression and withdraws his invitation to President Eisenhower to visit the Soviet Union. FRANCE LAUNCHES NEW LINER France launches the newest super-liner, the world's largest, proud- ly bearing the name "S.S. France." Christened by Madame Charles De Gaulle, the 1,035 foot craft will carry 2,000 passengers. OTHELLO OPENS IN NEW YORK The Soviet film version of Othello opens in New York, one of the highlights of the Soviet-American cultural exchange program. Top stars of stage and screen attend the Gotham premiere of the film. CONTINENTAL FASHION PARADE A whirlwind tour to famous European settings showcases the latest styles from leading designers. NON-VIOLENT DEMONSTRATION IN PARIS A group dedicated to opposing the use of force for any reason stages a sit-down demonstration on the Champs-Elysees. To dramatize their philosophy, they allow the gendarmes to haul them away in limp, non-resisting positions. PIANIST VAN CLIBURN IN MOSCOW The arrival of concert pianist Van Cliburn in Moscow shows that, despite the current chill in the Cold War, the U.S.-Soviet cultural exchange program has not been affected. He receives a jubilant welcome as he begins a month-long tour of the Soviet Union. TRAGEDY MARS MEMORIAL DAY RACE A disaster occurs at the Indianapolis 500 Speedway classic before the race starts, when a makeshift stand with some 100 people on it topples onto the crowd below. Most of the 175,000 spectators are unaware of it as they watch Jim Rathman win the race in record time. FIRST POLARIS FIRED FROM SUBMERGED SUBMARINE The 4-year program to mate the long-range missile and the nuclear submarine reaches a stirring climax with the first firing of a Polaris two-stage rocket from the submerged U.S.S. George Washington. SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS The Olympics are the big news this year. In the Winter Olympic Games at Squaw Valley, California, figure skater Carol Heiss wins America's first Gold Medal, and the U.S. hockey team goes on to defeat the Soviets and take first place. In the Summer Olympics in Rome, America's swimmers win 11 Gold medals, and the U.S. team does well in track and field events. Wilma Rudolph of the U.S. gains distinction as the top competitor, the only contestant to win three Gold Medals. Other sports events of the year see the Pittsburgh Pirates win their first World Series since 1927, and golf Masters winner Arnold Palmer take the U.S. Open crown. CONGO CRISIS CONTINUES As contingents of United Nations troops pour into the newly- independent violence-torn Congo (formerly a Belgian colonial pos- session), Belgian troops stay in key positions, despite Congolese ultimatums and Soviet threats that have brought a strong U.S. response in the raging debate in the Security Council. 15-YEAR-OLD GOLD RECORD STAR Tennessee's Brenda Lee is presented with a Gold Record in token of the one million sales of her song "I'm Sorry," the country's Number One record hit. I' FASHION IDEA In Germany, an innovative design in jewelry suggests magnets to eliminate the need for pierced ears. BULL RUN AT PAMPLONA The famous "folding of the bulls" at Pamplona, Spain, shows the mighty bulls thundering through the streets of the town and into the arena, amid a throng of wildly excited would-be matadors. FIRST RECOVERY OF CAPSULE FROM ORBIT The Discoverer XIII satellite orbits 17 times, then releases a data capsule which is recovered from the Pacific three hours later - the first time any object has been successfully recovered from an orbit in outer space. ECHO BALLOON RELAYS VOICES FROM SPACE A three-stage Thor Delta rocket carries into orbit a unique satellite, Echo I, a lOO-foot balloon. ROCKET PILOT REACHES HIGHEST ALTITUDE Major Robert M. White pilots the X-15 rocket plane to the greatest altitude ever attained by man, nearly 25 miles over Edwards Air Force Base, California - to the very threshold of space. DONNASCOURGESSEABOARD " Hurricane Donna, after its deadly course through the Caribbean 1 and the heart of Florida, slashes up the Atlantic Coast. The killer ; storm brushes New Jersey and New England, following closely the I path of the disastrous 1938 hurricane. IMISS AMERICA CHOSEN The beauty pageant judges choose Michigan's Nancy Anne Flemming, a straight-A student. CASTRO LAUNCHES INVASION SCARE Fidel Castro mobilizes 200,000 militiamen, charging America with arming mercenaries for an "imminent invasion" of Cuba, on the eve of the UN debate of Cuban charges of American aggression. In Moscow, Khrushchev throws his support behind Castro's charges. SATCHMO SWINGS IN CONGO One of America's most extraordinary ambassadors, Louis Arm- strong, arrives in the troubled Congo with his jazz band on a State Department sponsored goodwill mission, and receives a swinging reception. NAVY DOWNS NOTRE DAME At Philadelphia, Navy remains unbeaten with a 14-7 victory over Notre Dame. KENNEDY ELECTED~A record number of 67 million citizens go to the polls, and Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy is elected the 35th President of the United States in one of the closest Presidential races in history, Kennedy is the youngest man elected to the Presidency and the first Catholic. JFK appears with his family to acknowledge the honor - and makes reference to an expected baby, PRINCESS MARGARET ATTENDS PREMIERE OF SPARTACUS Britain's Princess Margaret and her husband, photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, are the honored guests at the London premiere of the film Spartacus. KENNEDY BABY DEBUTS Outside the Kennedy's Georgetown house, a hopeful crowd waits through sub-freezing weather for a glimpse of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jr., as the President-elect and his wife, Jacqueline, leave for Palm Beach.
