Mines are laid, road blocks set up, and Yank artillery roars into action. ROOSEVELT INAUGURATED FOR THE FOURTH TIME Franklin D. Roosevelt is once again sworn in as President with Harry S. Truman as Vice President before a select gathering. U.S. NAVY STRIKES TOKYO The U.S. Fifth Fleet takes position several hundred miles off Tokyo's shore. Huge carriers emerge from the armada, and fleets of warplanes head for Tokyo. Bombs pound the docks of Japan's ports. Huge fires sweep Tokyo streets. WAR WORKERS NEEDED War Mobilization Director James Byrnes announces that more war workers are needed. "If our soldiers are willing to die for our country," he says, "the rest of us must be willing to work for it." MEETING IN YALTA Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt are welcomed to the island of Yalta in the Crimean Sea. Heavy deliberations between the three heads of state begin. THE CAPTURE OF MT. SURIBACHI U.S. Naval ships hurl tons of shells at Mt. Suribachi, and the Marines slowly advance uphill. At last the summit is reached, and the marines plant the U.S. flag atop Suribachi - 750 miles from Tokyo! THE BATTLE OF MANILA Manila now lies in total ruin - the Stalingrad of the Pacific. President Osmena's government assumes power, and General MacArthur orders the stars and stripes to be raised, "nevermore to be hauled down by any foe." ROOSEVELT IS DEAD The world mourns when F.D.R. dies in his 13th year in the White House. Harry Truman is sworn in as President. REDS ROLL TOWARDS BERLIN Red tanks and cavalry retake Warsaw, where all that remains is the mere shell of a once thriving city. But Warsaw is freed, and the push for Berlin continues. MUSSOLINI EXECUTED An indignant mob in Milan kicks the dead bodies of Mussolini and his mistress, prior to hanging them from their feet in disgrace. WAR ENDS IN EUROPE President Truman proclaims V-E Day as Germany submits her surrender RUSSIA DECLARES WAR Russia declares war on Japan. An impressive show of Russia's armed strength foretells the fate awaiting Japan. PRESIDENT TRUMAN SPEAKS President Truman warns Japan that its war-making capacity will be obliterated, and that it will be engulfed by land and sea forces. THE ATOMIC BOMB EXPLODES The atomic age is entered as scientists gather in New Mexico for the test-firing of the atomic bomb. A few days later, the bomb levels the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. U.S. CELEBRATES END OF WAR Celebrations ensue across the nation as Truman announces Japan's surrender. Times Square hosts the greatest party of all, with millions revelling in the streets for three days and nights. GASOLINE BAN LIFTED Motorists go wild as the O.P.A. lifts war-time gas restrictions. THE TIGERS - WORLD CHAMPS! The Detroit American League pennant winners rout the Windy City's Cubs in the 7th game, 9 to 3, to take the World Series. NAZI CRIMINAL TRIAL IN NUREMBERG Nazi war criminals Goering, von Ribbentrop, Doenitz, etc., face an Allied court to answer for their war-time atrocities. AIN'T EDUCATION GRAND Veteran Meredith Stiles is attending Smith College - yes, ma'am, the women's college - the only male among all those gals. CLOTHES GO TO COLLEGE The University of California inaugurates a four-year course in ap- parel design, aimed to be the most comprehensive of its kind. REVEAL MECHANICAL BRAIN Technicians at MIT demonstrate a 1000ton calculating machine which solves complex problems in minutes. PRE-BUILT ALUMINUM HOUSES Pre-fabricated aluminum houses roll off assembly lines in Canada to relieve the housing shortage in bomb-shattered Britain. MONTREAL TOPS IN HOCKEY The Montreal Canadiens unleash a powerful attack on the New York Rangers and take the coveted Stanley Cup. BEHIND THE HATE BALL A deluge of hate mail swamps Jack Benny from contestants in the "1 can't stand Jack Benny because. . ." contest. SPECTACLE ON ICE Sonja Henie leads her company through intricate routines in a breathtaking ice revue.
