After her stage hit, "I Remember Mama" (1944), she went to Hollywood for "Duel in the Sun" and "The Paradine Case," Joan, whose father is a New York illustrator, is 25 and unmarried. She has earnestly read all the novels of Proust and enjoys Sibelius' symphonies. She is a fiery crusader for highbrow theater, which may account for her success as the pretty, crusading suffragette in the new play, "Strange Bedfellows" (pp 71-72).
