ON THE COVER: Joan Tetzel learned how to act first as a child radio performer, then as a theater understudy, then in small parts with Ingrid Bergman and Helen Hayes on Broadway. After her stage hit, "I Remember Mama" (1944), she went to Hollywood for "Duel in the Sun" and "The Paradine Case," Joan, whose father is a New York illustrator, is 25 and unmarried. She has earnestly read all the novels of Proust and enjoys Sibelius' symphonies. She is a fiery crusader for highbrow theater, which may account for her success as the pretty, crusading suffragette in the new play, "Strange Bedfellows" (pp 71-72).
