COVER:Photo of Franklin Roosevelt at 13 was an outwardly solemn, worldly young man. He had been to Europe, was an avid reader of the Scientific American and a student of foreign languages. Fortified by these accomplishments, he assumed a properly dignified expression when he posed for this studio portrait in 1895. However a faint smile lingering on his face suggests that his mind was really occupied with the exuberant and whimsical thoughts of any boy. He revealed these thoughts in his fascinating letters which, after more than 40 years, are now published for the first time on pages 121 to 136 in this issue.
