Among his documents was the manuscript of a book. Even his close associates were unaware of its existence. Its subject was the Abdication and Lord Beaverbrook completed it in 1958. Then he laid the book aside and never returned to it. It contains a full narrative of his own part in the King's Affair. Not only, as AJP Taylor remarks, is it Beaverbrook at his most sparkling; it also provides new information. At last it becomes clear why the King, after Beaverbrook and others warned him against it, persisted in the idea of a morganatic marriage. It also provides a vivid, day-by-day record of the crisis as Beaverbrook saw it unfold around him and includes a number of scathing attacks on Baldwin and others whom the writer regarded as the King's foes. Yet Lord Beaverbrook's principal motive was, as Mr. Taylor, sees it, 'one rarely credited to him, yet perhaps the strongest in his life. It was charity, the desire to help a human being in distress, particularly a human being harassed by the established order. Beaverbrook has been well called "a foul-weather friend"; never more so than with King Edward VIII during this crisis. THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF WINDSOR COLLECTION.
